Edinburgh Tests Motor Engine Through Long Line of Hose

At a recent test with a 450-500 gallon Hatfield motor fire engine at Edinburgh, Scotland, the engine was required to pump through 2,500 feet of hose in one single line with a 1-inch nozzle at the end. The hose, which was partly plain canvas and partly rubber-lined canvas, was disposed in snake-like fashion about the yard of the central fire station, and the photograph here reproduced was taken after the test, just as the firemen were about to commence "making up." The engine in question is the third Merryweather motor for Edinburgh, and supplements two motor Fire King steamers which have been in service for five and seven years respectively. In describing this test for FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING, Firemastcr Cordale, of Edinburgh, writes as follows:

First—-The pressure was obtained by the engine pumping through the hose with a suction lift of 6 feet below the level of the ground.
