Some years ago in a small Pennsylvania town not many hundred miles from Philadelphia, says Light, Heat and Power, the good brethren of a leading church removed or split; or, at any rate, put the edifice up for sale. About the same time a gas company formed, and for a building bought this old church. In the main auditorium a holder was put, a Lowe water gas apparatus stood in the Sunday-school room, a crude oil tank desecrated the pulpit, whilst the organ loft frowned upon the intrusion of the meter and the pipe tongs The superintendent at least felt at home, for he had been baptized and brought up in the same church wherein he daily made gas. Verily the evening wanderers, not knowing the fact of gas works, but seeing the gothic windows and the rising steeple in the midst of flame ami fumes, and hearing the resonant blast from within, must have thought the preacher was giving his congregation Hades. A line and the tale is told. The Ford evidently couldn’t stand it, for the whole outfit recently burned to the ground.
