EARTHQUAKE OR FIRE-WHICH?
Some of the insurance companies in San Francisco had photographic views taken showing the effects of the earthquake before the fire. They seem to have anticipated trouble a longish way ahead, and now are prepared with proof where earthquake cases are in dispute. Abundance of photographic matter is in their hands. It will all be used to insure fairness on both sides. Incidentally, it may be considered as an extraordinary thing that in the first 2,000 claims submitted to insurance men in San Francisco, after the earthquake and tire, every man filing a claim swore that his property was uninjured by the earthquake-—that it was a "straight loss” and, of course, total.
This corroborates the statement recently made in New York, by Chairman Atwood of the general loss committee at San Francisco, which was to the effect that several citizens were in a fair way to land in jail before settlements are completed.
