Device for Opening Valves
The accompanying illustration shows a simple device for opening large gates, invented by Louis D. Ehret, chief engineer, city waterworks, Sacramento, Cal. It may be attached to a valve and used for opening and closing it with little difficulty. The device shown is installed on a 30-inch suction valve in the 10,000,000-gallon Snow pumping engine of the Sacramento waterworks plant. Mr. Ehret first thought of operating the valve with an electric motor, but it was found that the expense of the motor and power would be too high., He then changed the power to compressed air. As there is an 8-inch pump operating in the plant to fill the air chambers on the pump, all that was necessary to do was to install a receiver and rig up the gears. With this arrangement the opening and closing of the large valve is performed in a most satisfactory manner, besides being a great saver of time and hard labor. So successful has the device proven that Mr. Ehret is now equipping three other large valves with others of the same kind.
