Department Store Fire at Columbus

The Armbruster Department Store located in the central part of the city of Columbus, Ohio, was recently damaged to the amount of $15,000 on property valued at $75,000 and $100,000 on contents, valued at $109,422. The building is a five-story wood and brick structure with brick partition walls and occupied a quarter block. The fire started in the basement from an unknown cause and was discovered by an employee w'ho gave the alarm. Chief J. Daniels found a dense smoke pouring out of the basement and first floor. He placed twenty-eight streams on the fire and handled the fire with such skill as to prevent it from going beyond the first floor. The follow ing apparatus was in service: Fifteen steamers, one gasoline pumping engine and one triple combination machine. The motor apparatus, made by the Seagrave Company, rendered excellent service. Approximately fourteen thousand feet of cotton rubber-lined hose w'as in service and one length burst during the fire. Twentyfive hydrants, each about 188 feet apart with a pressure of 70 pounds, were available and furnished good plug streams. Turret pipes were used. The contents consisted of clothing and dry goods.
