DEFECTIVE WIRE INSULATION.

一些非常有趣的conditions have recently developed as a result of tests made by the Wire Inspection bureau on factory product of rubber covered with wire. In one factory a lot of wire showed bad under bureau tests and investigation developed the fact that the calendering rolls used in making up the insulating compound were wearing out badly, and flakes of iron were getting into the rubber insulation, thereby greatly decreasing the insulation resistance. In another factory, on the occurrence of similar tests showing below the bureau standard, it was found that the cutting wheels on the insulating machine had become badly worn and tore the insulation instead of cutting the same. Other factories, through the same method, have arrived at the realisation of the fact that the compounds which could be successfully handled in cold weather could not he worked to advantage in hot weather, and, as a result, produce inferior insulation.

Mayor Henry Stolze, of Manitowoc, Wis., is working on two proposed laws which he will submit to the meeting of the Municipal league at Ashland next month, and ask support before the legislature. One proposes that the chiefs of police and fire departments in all cities be elected by the men of the department, and not appointed by a commission, as now, and the other relates to municipal ownership bonding limits.
