Ambrose Wise, one of the best-known citizens of Elmira, New York, died in that city on the 13th instant. He was prominently connected with the Elmira Volunteer Fire Department, and was for many years its Chief. He entered the service as a member of a Company, then advancing from place to place, finally he came to fill the highest office. Up to the last he maintained an interest in the Fii Department, and, had his health not failed, would have been chosen as head of the present force. His funeral was attended by the whole Volunteer Department. The pall-boarers ware all ex-OhiefEngineers.
