Calls received by the Copenhagen fire brigade in the 12 months ended March 31 last numbered 663, of which 22 were serious (two or more lines of hose used), 44 were medium (one line of hose), and 213 were slight fires, 197 trifling outbreaks, 37 chimney fires, 70 false alarms (22 malicious), and 80 out-district calls. There were also 143 fires extinguished by tenants and others without calling the brigade. The most serious fire (in a sugar refinery on February 4 last) required the use of 23 lines of hose. Combustible material too near fire, 72; woodwork too near fireplaces, 49; carelessness with fire and lights, 47 ; children playing, 35; petroleum oil lamps, 33: overheating 30; sparks and hot ashes, 25; spontaneous ignition, 22; carelessness with matches, 18; electricity, 18, and defective fireplaces, 11, were the principal ascertained causes; fires of unknown causes, 64. The Copenhagen fire brigade comprises: Nine officers. 52 sub-officers and 200 firemen and coachmen, with eight stations, five steamers, 17 manuals (four hand drawn), eight escapes, and other appliances. Several floating and land steam fire engines owned by the port and naval authorities are placed at the disposal of the brigade when required.
