Convention of Illinois Firemen

The twenty-ninth annual convention of the Illinois Firemen’s Association took place at Bushnell, Ill., January 9, 10 and 11. An introductory address was made by Chief P. C. Albrecht and the convention was convened by President Otto Sorgenfrei. Addresses of welcome were made by Mayor Harris, C. C. Chain and others, and responses were made by President Sorgenfrei, T. R. Johnstone, B. F. Staymates and M. J. Myers. The memorial service was held in the First Presbyterian Church when the roll of deceased members of the association was read by W E. Price of Champaign. President Sorgenfrei, T. R. Johnstone, J. E. Dertinger, B. F. Staymates, and Rev. C. E. Schaible made addresses. At the regular services of the convention the program included the following topics: “Benefits to be Derived from Attendance at our Annual Conventions,” by Chas. L. Bimm, Wyanet, Ill. “The Illinois Firemen’s Association Tournament; its Past and Future,” by M. E. Phillips, Chief Chicago Heights. “Organization and its Benefits,” by Wm. R. McCabe, Joliet. “What Accident Indemnity Means to the Firemen of Illinois,” by Prof. B. F. Staymates, Clinton. “Civic Pride and its Environment,” by an Observer, Flarry Rohrbach, Blue Island. “Physical and Medical Requirements of a Fireman,” by Dr. Leo Steiner, Physical Examiner, Civil Service Commission, Chicago. “Fire Prevention and Safety Standards in School Buildings,” by Winfield E. Day, Chief Inspector Pyrene Mfg. Co., Engineering Department, Chicago. "The Economicsof the Fire Waste in Illinois,” by Walter H. Bennett, State Fire Marshal, Springfield. “Fire Prevention as an Investment,” by C. W. Hejda, Chief Inspector, Bureau of Fire Prevention and Public Safety, Chicago. “The Benefits of Standard Hose Couplings and Co-operation between Fire Departments,” by Edw. R. Townsend, Insurance Engineer, Chicago. “The Proper Care of Fire Hose,” by A. R. Small, Vice-President Underwriters’ Laboratories. “The Firemen’s Pension Fund Act, as Revised Act 1915, and the Effects upon the Pension Fnnd in the smaller Cities,” by Wm. Lister, City Attorney of Evanston. “National Pension for Firemen,” by Otis F. Glenn, Murphysboro. Address by Clarence F. Buck, Monmouth. A banquet and a ball were features of the convention.
