大火扫荡班戈,我。

Fire starling at 4 p. m. Sunday, April 30, on Broad and Union streets, close by the junction of the Penobscott river and Kenduskeag stream, which divides the city of Bangor, Me., swept northward, fanned by a stiff southerly breeze, wiping out practically all the business district and public buildings and had consumed the best residential district on the northern side before it could be subdued. the efforts of the fire department, under Chief W. S. Mason, from the time the fire started, were absolutely futile until midnight, when rain somewhat checked the progress of the flames. The fire swept north along Broad street, then jumped the Kenduskeag stream, running along on the western bank along Exchange street. Property valued at upward of $4,000,000 was destroyed and one hundred families were made homeless. One life is known to have been lost, an unknown man being killed by a falling wall after his clothing had taken fire. Mayor Mullen placed the city under martial rule. The back wind created by the fire itself fanned the flames toward the south, threatening the part of the town which at first seemed safe. Before 5 o’clock the Maine Central was obliged to vacate its depot, the retreating office crews seeing the building engulfed almost before they were out of danger. The city was soon in darkness and the greatest confusion prevailed, the entire population being in the streets. The fire was visible for 25 miles around and thousands of people swarmed in to an approachable distance from surrounding towns. In the pathway of the fire were banks, office buildings, the public library and other structures, all of which were reduced to ashes. The city was soon shut off from telephonic communication by the burning of the central office of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company, and calls for aid from Portland, Lewiston and Augusta were sent out by the wire chief of the company, who climbed a pole and cut itt on a trunk line. Several alarms were sounded almost simultaneously. In addition to the fire at the corner of Broad and Exchange streets, the firemen found a blaze in a bicycle repair shop in the rear of the telephone offices. Both fires spread with such rapidity that the firemen were helpless. As the fire burned north, the path of danger grew wider, while sparks set innumerable fires, many of them a considerable distance from the main conflagration. An ineffectual attempt was made to stay the progress of the fire by dynamiting several blocks, including the Smith and Stryck land buildings, located in a triangle formed by Hammond and Central streets and the Kenduskeag stream, but the fire bridged the chasm and continued with unabated fury. Help from outside cities began to arrive soon after 9 o’clock. The Augusta firemen were the first to arrive, and to them was assigned the duty of saving the residential district, if possible. Among the buildings burned were the Hodgkins block, the Fiskc building, Fairbanks & Co., the Bangor Public Library, the telephone office, post office, office of the Bangor Daily News, the Morse-OUver block, a seven-story structure, in which were located the offices of the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad, the Windsor Hotel, seven churches and three school buildings. Failing to stop the fire by dynamiting the buildings at the junction of Hammond and Central streets, the firemen took their stand further to the north and preparations were made to blow up other buildings and make a wider breach. It has been definitely settled that a cigarette stub thrown into some hay caused the conflagration.

I am also satisfied that from the first the fire was too strong to have been stopped under the circumstances.”
