COMPLIMENTARY TO INSPECTOR-GENERAL M’COWEN.
The board of underwriters of Newfoundland, representing twenty-two fire insurance companies. British and American, has written a letter to InspectorGeneral John R. McCowen, of the police and fire departments of St. John’s, Newfoundland, in which its members express their very high appreciation of his services in an arson case recently tried in the Supreme court of that island—there by emphasizing the laudatory remarks of the chief justice in his charge to the jury on that occasion. The board also availed itself of the opportunity to congratulate InspectorGeneral McCo_____en on the high state of efficiency of the fire brigade which [he had] so ably organized and had since superintended.” In his reply the inspector-general pays a very high tribute to the firemen and the efficiency of the department—evidenced by the fact that the "total amount paid for losses on the ninety-two fires which occurred during the year ending the 30th of June last, was but $6,058being an average of $64.74 for each fire."
