The biggest hindrance to the department was a shortage of hose and bursting of some of the hose in service. Fifty firemen were on duty, both volunteer and paid. One American-La France motor pumping engine, one city service truck, horse-drawn, two horsedrawn hose wagons and three hand reels were used. The American-La France pumper worked excellently and without a hitch. Four 4-inch double hydrants were available for use, placed at from 300 to 150 feet apart. The hydrant pressure was 90 lbs., and supplied five hydrant streams. Three engine streams were also thrown, using 1 ⅛and lj^-inch nozzles. Ten 8and 6-inch water mains were located on the surrounding streets. Four thousand feet of hose were laid, of which 11 lengths burst. The water pressure held up very well during the entire fire; Mankato has a gravity supply. The contents of the building were classed as follows by Chief Leas: Department store stock and moving picture theatre with films on the first floor; department store stock in basement; three upper floors filled with office furniture to accommodate 600 students who attend the business school.
