By hard work of the Cobalt fire department, assisted by a company of the Haileybury and New Liskeard fire departments, the Bank of Commerce, Hunter Block, town hall and Griffith Block were saved. The burned buildings were constructed of wood, covered with iron sheeting, making the task of the firemen a very difficult one. The burned section was amply served with hydrants from 8-inch, 6-inch and 4-inch mains. There were in use during the conflagration 5,000 feet of 2 1/2-inch hose (16 lines), with nozzles from 1 inch to 1 1/4 inches; one third size Waterous steam engine and one Seagrave No. 9 ladder truck, while the regular pumping station gave excellent pressure. The losses are partially covered by insurance, but those losing most heavily are Milton Carr, $35,000, with $10,000 insurance; and Cobalt Hotel, $80,000, no insurance. It is estimated that $200,000 worth of property was destroyed.
