Chiefs to Confer at East Liverpool on Standard Couplings
Chief Arthur S. Aungst of East Liverpool, Ohio, has issued the following letter to chiefs within sixty miles of his city:
亲爱的先生:你会冒着生命危险拯救一个构建ing. Will you risk a few hours to learn what will probably save a town? This is an invitation to attend a meeting of fire chiefs within a radius of sixty miles of East Liverpool, to be held April 19, 1916, at East Liverpool Fire Department Headquarters, at 10 a. m. The meeting is in the interest of yourself, your citizens and the property over which, by virtue of your public office, you are guardian, and for which you will be held to strict accountability in case of disaster. The purpose is to get the heads of departments of Central Eastern Ohio and points in Pennsylvania and West Virginia within sixty miles of East Liverpool to confer relative to standardization of hose couplings and everything else that has to do with the inter-exchange of service between towns in time of conflagrations. If you now labor under the delusions that your neighboring towns can couple on to your hose and fire hydrants, it is time that you wake up, for in the majority of cases, due to the fact that manufacturers each have a separate size coupling, in most cases this cannot be done., Ponder over the following questions: What is the exact size of your hose couplings? What is the exact size of your neighbors’? From how many towns within sixty miles could you secure help where yot* know with absolute certainty that the hose would couple on? Who arc the chiefs of those towns? Do you know they would help you, or just suppose they would? Did ’Frisco think the city would burn? Boston? Chelsea? Baltimore? Salem? How many Ohio villages thought so? The recent conflagrations in the South show the urgent need of uniform couplings. When you know the low cost of placing yourself in a position to use large modern apparatus loaned to you in time of necessity, you will be surprised. This and many other things pertaining to the work of the fire department wil be gone over, and your time will have been well spent. Bring a coupling with you or the size and number of threads. Central Ohio chiefs have organized and Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo are getting ready. The movement started in Ohio and is spreading to all states. You arc urged to make special efforts to be present on the 19th of April. Yours very truly,
