Chief James Cape, of Racine, Resigns
Chief James Cape, head of the fire department of Racine, Wis., for more than twenty-two years, offered his resignation to the fire and police commission at a meeting in December 2. and it was accepted and he was retired on pension. The board in accepting Chief Cape’s resignation voted resolutions commending his good work during the years he had been connected with the department. Chief Cape was one of the oldest officials at the head of a fire department in Wisconsin, he having been connected with the department since January 1, 1881, when he was made a call man in No. 1 Hook and Ladder Company by the then Chief Gottbehuet. He was made captain of the company on July, 1882, and on May 1. 1894, was promoted to battalion chief of the department. He was made chief on June 1, 1900. The portrait published herewith was taken Shortly after his appointment. Chief Cape was born on January 3. 1855. The appointment of Assistant Chief Clarence R. Gillen as head of the department, has been announced, his office to commence on January 1, 1923. The appointment of Chief Gillen by the hoard was unanimous.
