Chief Dowdell, Meadville, Dies front Accident

Firemanic circles throughout the western section of Pennsylvania were shocked to learn of the recent death of Howard Dowdell, chief of the fire department of Meadville, Pa. In company with Sergeant Bergen of the Lawrence Park barracks of the state police, Chief Dowdell was inspecting the ruins of a disastrous fire in Meadville for evidence of incendiarism. The chief lost his balance and fell into the basement, a distance of eighteen feet.

He was immediately removed to the Spencer hospital and it seemed for a time that he would recover, but the chief's age was against him and he finally succumbed to his injuries. He was sixtynine years old and had been connected with the Meadville fire department for thirty years, serving as chief for eighteen years.
