主要问for Larger Kansas City Department
According to a suggestion to the fire commission of Kansas City, Mo., on December 12, by Chief Alexander Renderson, of the fire department, in order to properly protect the city from fire there should be a much larger department than is now employed. Chief Henderson said: “We need at least thirtysix companies. The problem of giving protection is becoming real serious. Last Saturday one hook and ladder company answered eighteen calls in twenty-four hours. Yesterday and last night we were kept busy going from one fire to another. The calls were from all sections of the city. The greatest drawback in building fire stations is the people we are here to protect. They all want protection, but as soon as it is announced a station is contemplated in this or that section, the property owners immediately send in a remonstrance.
Chief Henderson explained to the commission that the present apparatus was insufficient and that ten ladder companies were not enough for a city the size of Kansas City, the hose also in commission was not in good condition and at least six thousand feet of new hose should be purchased The report of the department for November showed that the fire loss was greater than for the same month of last year, the total being $268,125.
