At a meeting of the Chicago Common Council held Monday evening, October 21, the report of Fire Marshal Benner for the quarter ending October 1 was submitted. It contains the following: The additions were two new Steamers, delivered August 3, a life-saving apparatus, just completed at a cost of and which will be put in service as soon as an appropriation is made for a house and men; 6,000 feet of hose, making 36,750 feet on hand. The machinery is in good working order, and the horses in good condition, while the firealarm service is entirely satisfactory, and the dis cipline of the force at its usual standard. There were 136 fire~-47 in July, 4! in August, and 48 in September; loss, $75,222; insurance, $527,955: in surance over loss, $473,054; property immediately involved. $x,o.~7,2xo. In only one instance were four or more buildings c* v~red by one fire. The false alarms were 23. Th~ Department travel. d 2,1703~ miles and worked 268 19-60 hours at fires.
