Changes in Fire Alarm System Proposed in Sioux City

A change in the system of handling fire alarm calls is being considered in Sioux City, Ia. Under the present system all calls, except from certain box numbers and fires occurring near certain stations, are reported to headquarters at fire station No. 1. From there they are relayed to the outlying fire stations. In case of an extensive fire, said Mr. Mann, there would be the possibility that some of the stations . would be unoccupied and calls could not be answered. If the police station is notified the desk sergeant could relay the call to the proper station and could also notify the pumping station so that fire pressure could be had immediately. The change, it is stated, would be especially valuable during the night. After 9 o'clock telephonic communication with the station is cut olf to a certain extent, telephone switchboard operators receiving the alarms and calling the stations. The fire stations cannot be called by telephone after 9 o’clock for any other purpose than to report a fire.
