Goddard, of the National Fire Prevention association, mentioned a loss of $30,000. that was caused by a cigarette thrown into a hale of cotton; a loss of $150,000, that was caused by the use of inflammable fluid for cleaning by the open flame of an artificial light; the loss of two lives and $75,000 by fire that was caused by a hot-air furnace that was not set properly; a loss of $750,000 by fire that was caused by sparks from a locomotive near a woodworking plant; a loss of $13,000,000, that was caused by the smoking of cigarettes while spreading rags. All of the instances occurred within less than a year anti within a circle of 100-mile radius.
