Carriage Factory Burns at West Reading.

f . r . Himmelberger的广泛的运输工作at West Reading, Pa., together with seven dwelling houses, were destroyed by fire recently. Over 300 vehicles of every description were burned. In writing to FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING concerning this fire, our correspondent says: "The Himmelberger building is located in the southeastern part of the borough and consists of two buildings, three stories in height, constructed of brick and stone. One was about eleven years old and the other four. One building had partition walls on the first floor. There were no sprinkler attachments or private protection, except a couple of hand fire extinguishers. The fire was discovered at four o’clock a. m., in the lumber shed and burned for four hours. A verbal alarm was sent to the department and responded to by one steam engine, one combination wagon and one chemical engine. There were three single hydrants in the immediate vicinity and with an eighty pound water pressure and nozzles of 1½ and 1½ inches, the firemen were able to maintain three streams until the flames were extinguished. The street at this point is forty feet wide and carries a four-inch water main. Our water system is stand pipe. The West Reading fire department consists of one hose wagon, and depends largely on the city of Reading for assistance in case of fire, notwithstanding our borough has no connection whatever with that city. It is fortunate that such assistance could be had in this instance, as otherwise a greater loss undoubtedly would have been caused by the fire. The buildings were valued at $65,000 and the contents at $30,000.
