Building Damaged at Quebec

A store and brick four-story building in the lower part of Quebec, Que., was recently damaged by fire. The structure occupies a space 140 by 160 feet and had brick partition walls. It was occupied by Renaud & Co. The fire started in the second story by an overheated stove and was discovered by an employee who gave the alarm. Sub-Chief L. Donnelly found the fire coming through the windows on two streets. He immediately placed fourteen streams on the fire, two of which were engine streams. Wires were a hindrance in fighting the fire. The following apparatus were in service; two engines, three aerial ladders, four ladder trucks, three chemical engines, twelve hose wagons, and twelve reels. Seven hydrants, with a pressure of 125 pounds, were available. 6,350 feet of cotton rubber-lined hose was used. Sub-Chief L. Donnelly handled the fire ably and saved part of the building and contents. The loss on property, valued at $50,000, was $23,600, and on contents, principally glass ware, valued at $60,000, was $51,500.
