塞尼卡福尔斯举行的美国消防车公司N. Y., is still in the foremost rank of popularity as a builder of fire engines and pumps, and secures extensive patronage all over the country. It was selected by the city of Boston to supply the pumping engines for the new fireboat which has recently been built for the use of the fire department of that place—a fireboat which has already proved its usefulness and the excellence of its engines in one or more serious fires. The boat itself is among the first of its class in every way, and its pumping machinery is"especially powerful. It consists of two complete sets of the compound duplex fly-wheel type, with water cylinders 10 inches in diameter and 11 inches stroke. The high pressure cylinders are 12 3-4inches in diameter and the low pressure, 18 inches in diameter, both pistons working directly on the pump rod. They were constructed to develop an exceptionally high piston speed, being at once not only the most powerful, but most economical engines ever built for this duty. They have been found in every way up to the mark. The contract has been thoroughly fulfilled. It called for a delivery of 3.000 gallons per minute for each set of pumps, under a pressure of 175 pounds per square inch, giving a combined capacity of 6,000 gallons per minute. The design of the pumps is remarkably compact, and it may be added that they are the first to be built for this duty on the compound principle.
