BETTER PAY FOR FARGO FIREMEN.

While Mayor Johnson, of Fargo, N. Dak., cannot raise the annual salary of Chief Sutherland, except the city passes an ordinance to that effect, be has succeeded in obtaining the passage of another ordinance whereby, after the first year's work and upon the recommendation of the chief of the department, the mayor may raise the salary of any fireman $5 a month until the salary has reached $75 a month, at which figure it shall remain. The mayor says he is disposed to raise the salary of any fireman who distinguishes himself by meritorious work: otherwise, however, he will leave the payroll as it is at present.

Lieutenant Edmund Sweeny, of the Chicago fire department, was recently badly hurt by a falling cornice at the building at Thirteenth and State streets.
