BETTER HOSE FOR MILL PROTECTION.
The National board of underwriters held a meeting in the Hardware club New York, on Tuesday last, at which considerable discussion as to the fire equipment of mills took place. One of the propositions made was, that, if the manufacturers of mill fire hose would improve the quality of their brands, the board would recommend the use of such improved hose in the factories they insure. It is likely this suggestion may be acted upon by the hose men; but it is not plain how they are to obtain a better price for such improved quality of hose. The specifications of the fire underwriters call for more expensive hose than that which is now made for mill purposes; but will the action of the board secure sale for it at an increased rate? The beggarly price paid for mill hose at present scarcely warrants its production. Any change for the better will, no doubt, be accepted by the manufacturers.
