Barns Burned at Brandon
A fire, due to spontaneous combustion, destroyed five barns at the Insane Hospital, Brandon, Manitoba, at 4.40 p. m., July 22. It was discovered by attendants, who were milking in the barn where it started, and when discovered it was burning fiercely. The hospital fire brigade endeavored to extinguish the fire and delayed a public alarm some twenty-five minutes, and the alarm was received by the fire department from an indirect source. Many of the attendants were at the annual fair, which was being held at the time. The fire 1 apparatus at the central station, in command of Chief J. Melhurst, made the run of two and three-tenths miles to the fire in quick time, and when they reached the fire they saw there was no hope of saving the buildings. Six streams were on the fire and water was pumped front a reservoir. The power house and wire lines nearby were saved. The buildings were all of frame construction and because of a long dry spell, were ripe for a quick fire. Some 225 head of cattle and 30 horses were rescued, together with farming implements, etc. Six lengths of hose burned. The buildings were placed together and near the main buildings.
