It is 28.000 feet in length and passes over many trestles and through tunnels in mountainous parts, conducting the water to the turbine in the powerhouse. The lowest point of the pipe line on one of these trestles is under a 300ft. head, which is equivalent to 130 pounds pressure per square inch. An incident showing the great reliability of this stave wood water pipe due to its great lightness is of special interest. The trestle at the point above mentioned in this pipe line during a freshet two years ago last spring was washed out. leaving the pipe suspended in midair for a span of 60 feet without injury to the pipe line and without leakage of water. This would undoubtedly have been difficult, if not impossible, were the oipe constructed of cast iron, on account of its great weight, or steel, owing to its liability to strain at the joints.
