Autos Burned in Chicago

Fifty-six electric automobilies were recently consumed in a fire in Chicago that destroyed a garage and a storage warehouse. The building where the fire originated stood on the South Side for 15 years. The structure, which was of brick and wood, was four stories high and occupied a space of 125 by 50 feet. The fire, which started on the second floor, was discovered by occupants at 5:15 a. m. Two alarms were given by the lieutenant of Engine Company No. 45, who saw the fire when returning from another fire, and immediately 14 pieces of apparatus of the Continental. Metropolitan and Nott makes responded. When the firemen arrived the flames had spread to the upper floors. Eight 2 1/2-inch double hydrants gave ample pressure to supply 11 engine streams. The nozzles used were 1 1/4-inch. The width of the street in front of the damaged property was 42 feet, in which a 12 and 6-inch main were laid. The loss was $21,000 on the building and $75,000 on the contents. The fire, which gave Battalion Chief F. Smith a hard fight for two hours, was confined to the building.

Frank Kiniski, ladderman, was killed and seven other firemen badly hurt in a fire which completely destroyed the $350,000 North High School in Minneapolis last week. The firemen were caught under falling walls. Several of the injured may die. The blaze started in the manuual training department and was probably caused by crossed wires.
