Artesian Wells.
In the latest annual report of the water commissioner of Taunton, Mass., considerable space is devoted to the description of the drilling of the test artesian well at the works, and to interesting data and observations concerning the subject of these wells in general, from which we abstract the following:
Although the issue (of boring the test well) was doubtful, the result would be such a benefit if crowned with success, that it was determined to make the experiment, and a contract was made with the Pierce Artesian and Oil Well Supply Company of New York, to drill a well eight inches in diameter for $7 per foot, and the use of steam for the engine.
