A Satisfactory Trial.
There was an exhibition given here yester day by Mr. George Neally, of New York, of his patent Fire Respirator, aided by Mr. J. D. Johnson, of Steamer No. 6. The room in the Hose Depot is about 10 by 16 feet. Two small furnaces were used to hold the fire, waste, woolen rags, pine wood, coal oil, turpentine, etc., being used to produce smoke. The room was filled with smoke so dense that it was impossible for any person to remain there more than ten seconds, yet Mr. Neally, with his Respirator, remained in thirty-seven minutes, and after he came out Mr. Johnson put the apparatus on and remained fifteen minutes, when be was called out by the Chief and the exhibition was concluded. Sulphur was added to the flame, which made a stifling gas which no person could breath with.. out causing instant death; but it did not trou ble the inventor in the least.
Chief McQuade and the Commissioners after witnessing the experiment, fully approved of it as being the best invention of the kind yet brought to notice, and that it was invalua ble where buildings were filled with smoke. Mr. Cuyler thought that it would be a good thing for the Protectives to bave.-4lbany Press.
