A Non-Freezing High Water Alarm.
The device illustrated herewith, which is known as Simpson’s non-freezing high water alarm, is intended for use in connection with reservoirs, steam pipes, water tanks, etc. It consists of a copper box or hopper attached to the end of a half-inch pipe as shown in the cut, and so arranged as to descend when filled with water, and close the spring D, shown at the top, thus ringing a common electric bell in the engine room, at any distance from the machine, which is attached to the outside of the stand-pipe at the high water limit, as shown in the illustration.
It is rendered non-freezing by the following device : The pipe A, which connects and supports the instrument, is cut on the under side half way off with a crosswise slot /; no water will enter the machine until it attains sufficient velocity to leap across the slot, and will be running fast enough to prevent freezing ; when the speed of the water slackens it suddenly falls through the slot so that no trickling water will form ice in or about the machine ; the hopper is instantly emptied by the apertured bottom and the discharging syphon H. The whole is protected from the weather by a housing C.
