A Monongahela City Blaze.
At Monograph City, Pa., tire took place in the 1-story, brick, slate-roofed building of the Cartel Fan and Engineering company, situated in Tenth street, and occupying a space of 60*100 ft. Fe building was nineteen years old and was not equipped with sprinklers, only with hand-chemcal extinguishers. The blaze, whose origin is unknown, started in the blacksmith’s shop and had a good start before the fire department, under Chief S. M. Donovan, arrived with a hose wagon, taking up its position in the street, which in front of the damaged building is 50 ft. wide. On it runs a 4-in. main, with four available whyrants—two double distant, 200 ft. from each other and having a pressure at each of 120 lb. Only two streams—both hydrant—were thrown, and the gravity supply was adequate to furnish these. Four hundred feet of cotton hose was used, not one length of which burst, with shutoff 1-in. nozzles. The loss on the building was $25,000. with an insurance of $4,000; on the contents—machinery—$21,000, fully insured.
A nrivate fire alarm telegraph system has been installed by E. M. Phelps, of Chicago, at his country place.
