一张很棒的消防纸。
TWO DECADES OF USEFULNESS.
1897年11月17日、火和水完成twentieth year. On that day in the year 1877.it was first published—its title being then “The National Fireman’s Journal.” Its aim was to “provide for the firemen of this country a weekly journal devoted to their interests exclusively;” and to “discuss from an independent standpoint the many weighty topics which are presented for the con- sideration of firemen from time to time; “to” cheer [firemen] in their noble work; to excite them to honorable rivalry; to impress upon them the bright examples of so many noble ones who have traveled the same path before them, and,to the best of our ability, instruct them as to the best means of doing their work and bearing their burdens.” Another important part of the mission of The National Fireman’s Journal was that of “addressing the general public in the interests of firemen, and endeavoring to excite a better and more complete recognition of their services.’’ It was also to address “ those in authority, by who e action the firemen are provided with the ways and means for maintaining theif organizations and performing the duties assigned to them.” All this was to be done from an independent standpoint, for The National Fireman’s Journal (like FIRE AND WATER to-day) was not the “tool of any clique or ring for the promulgation of any particular ideas or for the advancement of the special aims of any person or set of persons.”
After a decade of success and usefulness the proprietors of The National Fireman’s Journal found that in treating of matters connected with the fire service of the coantry they were ” obliged to treat to some extent of the water service as well” —the two are so “ knit together that they are inseparable ”— fire protection being “ impossible without both the fire and water branches of the public service.” It was. therefore, decided upon to “ enlarge the field of The Journal and to embrace the subject of hydraulics, so far as it relates to the matter of liie protection.” In accordance with this design the title of the paper was changed to FIRE AND WATER, and its scope enlarged until it became a journal devoted to “ fire protection and water supply, hydraulic and municipal engineering.”
Furthermore, only in the columns of FIRE AND Water—the accredited organ of the International Fire Chiefs’ Association, the Massachusetts State Firemen’s Association, and other fire associations of greater or less renown, and the American and New England Water Works associations—will be found not only the news of what is being done in their respective fields, but also sound, practical, scientific papers on the topics treated of by such associations, together with the fullest and most complete reports of their conventions and the discussions that take place during their meetings—the last, often veibatim.
Hence it is that the subscription list of FIRE AND WATER is not confined to the United States alone, but shows a long roll of readers in Great Britain and Ireland, the East Indies,
