A Clever Fire Escape.

A Clever Fire Escape.

Something out of the ordinary in the line of fire protection is the fire escape and stand-pipe of the Kirker & Bender Fire Escape Company of Louisville, Ky. As will be seen by the accompanying sketch, the escape has the appearance of a stand-pipe, and is made of sheet steel. At the recent convention of the fire chiefs in Louisville this escape was one of the things that attracted particular attention. It received the almost unanimous approval of the firemen present, and many of them passed through it. A carefully drawn up letter approving the escape was signed by the chiefs of all the principal cities in the States, and is a very strong recommendation of the patent.

In the center of the escape is a stand-pipe, which can be connected to the water main. Hose plugs are connected with the stand-pipe at as many points as desired, to which the engine hose can be attached, and which would practically be a water tower and fire escape combined. A ladder, if so desired, can be placed on the outside as a convenience to firemen, and also has a windlass for hoisting up the hose, thus saving a great deal of valuable time which is lost in carrying hose up ladders.
