Jan. 27—The Lexington Fire Department responded to two fires within hours of each other on Wednesday. One caused a local hotel to close and the other led to the supposed death of a family pet.

At about 12:30 p.m., Lexington firefighters responded to an alarm at the Holiday Inn Express at Vineyards Crossing.

Upon investigation, crews discovered a small fire inside the wall in the mechanical room near the dryers and upgraded the call to a structure fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, and no injuries were reported to staff or guests.

Smoke from the fire traveled up the wall and affected four other rooms in the hotel. The Holiday Inn Express will be closed for repairs for an undetermined period of time.

At short time later, at approximately 3 p.m., the Lexington Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire on Old Linwood Road.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire showing from the front of the structure and began searching for any occupants who may have been inside, as initially reported.

A short time later, the occupants of the house, three adults and four children, were confirmed to be out of the structure and unharmed, but a dog was believed to have perished in the blaze.

The house received heavy damage and the fire also caused heat damage to the vinyl siding of a nearby home.

The Red Cross was notified and are assisting the displaced occupants of the house.
