A man and a baby injured in a third-floor apartment fire were helped from the burning house by another tenant, a passerby and an off-duty Providence firefighter, reports theProvidence Journal.
The fire was preceded by an explosion, according to witnesses.
The man was reportedly seriously burned. The extent of the six-moth-old baby’s injuries was not immediately available. They and a woman who also lived on the third floor were taken to hospitals, Pawtucket Mayor Donald R. Grebien said.
Their names and conditions were not immediately available.
Fire Chief William Sisson the cause of the explosion would be the focus of an investigation Wednesday morning, when local officials will be joined by federal and state investigators.
Off-duty Providence Firefighter Jermaine Woods, who was nearby celebrating his father’s birthday, raced to the scene of the explosion and led the woman and child to safety. Woods put himself in harm’s way to save a mother and child from a heavy fire situation without any fire protection or fire gear or regard for his own safety, the department said.
