Seven Rescued from NH Apartment Fire

Seven people, including a baby, were rescued from the balconies of their three-story Manchester (NH) apartment building after it caught fire early Thursday morning.

Two firefighters suffered minor burns during the rescue. One of the victims estimated that it was only about three minutes from the time she called 911 until a firefighter grabbed her and pulled her down a ladder, according to a NECN report (http://bit.ly/yvUbUS).

The building was not sprinklered. Officials suspect an improperly disposed cigarette may be to blame for the four-alarm fire, which necessitated calling in off-duty firefighters to battle the flames. Fire Chief James Burkush said the fire had gained “significant headway” before firefighters were notified about it.
