A Middletown Volunteer firefighter was hospitalized after getting trapped when a home collapsed during a firefight Sunday night.
Flames attracted attention from neighbors in the 500 block of Water Street of Royalton around 9:15 p.m., leading to 90 firefighters from four counties coming in to fight the fire.
The homeowner was found dead on the first floor, Middletown Fire Chief Kenton L. Whitebread Jr. said in a statement Monday. The Dauphin County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 67-year-old William Hardy.

The Dauphin County Coroner’s Office saidHardy died from thermal burns and ruled the manner of death as accidental.
Around 9: 57 p.m., the second floor of the house collapsed while firefighters were inside, Whitebread said. Three firefighters fell in the collapse, and a fourth was trapped under the debris.
The three firefighters from Swatara Fire were rescued by their own crews and were unharmed, Whitebread said.
Middletown firefighter Shawn Menear was trapped under debris for about 40 minutes, according to Whitebread, before rescue crews were able to get him out.
Menear was transported to Hershey Medical Center, where he was stabilized before being flown to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Whitebread said Menear’s condition is not being released as of Monday evening.
“The officers and members of the Middletown Volunteer Fire Department have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support over the last 24 hours,” Whitebread said. “We ask that you please be patient as we navigate through this difficult time.”
