One Killed in Brooklyn Building Explosion

Fire officials suspect that the removal of a stove may have led to a gas leak that caused an explosion and fire Saturday, leaving a woman dead and injuring three others in Brooklyn’s Borough Park, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The fire tore off the facade of the three-story building along 13th Avenue, and a preliminary investigation indicates it may have been caused by a tenant who had removed a high-end stove from the building’s second floor while moving out, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.

“They were moving out of the apartment and were going to take the stove with them,” he said. “To take a stove with you it entails disconnecting the gas line which leads us, preliminarily, to look in that direction.”

The woman, whose identity wasn’t released, was found dead in a stairwell, officials said. A 34-year-old man walking by the building shortly after 1 p.m. suffered a serious injury that is not life-threatening. His 9-year-old son and a 27-year-old man suffered less severe injuries. All three were being treated at Methodist Hospital.
