State Fire Marshal’s Office says the victim is 63-year-old Raymond Howland. Investigators said Howland died from smoke inhalation and the fire started in the living room of his house on Bluff Circle, but the cause cannot be determined.
Tthe neighbors across the street called in the fire around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Several neighboring departments responded to the call.
Investigators with the State Fire Marshal’s office are still trying to figure out the cause of the fire.
Capt. Scott Doyle said this is the first fatal fire in New Gloucester since he started working at the department 20 years ago.
“Nothing can prepare you for an instance like this,” Doyle said. “This is our neighborhood. It’s our community. We all live in the town, and there’s nothing that can prepare you for this type of situation. There’s a lot of grim faces over there with our fellow firefighters.
