KEITH MCGEE was hired as the new chief of the Apex (NC) Fire Department in December, replacing retiring Chief Mark Haraway. A longtime firefighter from Rocky Mount, McGee began his firefighting career as a high school senior in Wilkesboro. He had been with the Rocky Mount (NC) Fire Department since 1991, rising to the position of operations division chief. McGee was chosen out of 164 nationwide applicants for the job. He will oversee a departmental budget of $5.4 million, 83 personnel, and 25 vehicles. Haraway retired after more than 30 years in emergency services.
SHAWN HENRY was appointed chief of the Merced (CA) Fire Department (MFD). Henry, 51, has been a firefighter for 31 years and has worked for the city of Merced since 1991. Former Chief Mike McLaughlin left the position in early 2014 to become deputy chief for the Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department. MFD Operations Chief Don Long had been serving as acting chief. Henry has worked his way up through the ranks in Merced, starting as a firefighter in 1991, eventually being promoted to battalion chief in 2009.
