A fire touched off by a Fourth of July fireworks show after theJersey Shore BlueClawsbaseball game in Lakewood was quickly put out Monday night with no injuries, officials said.
Shrubbery behind the centerfield wall at ShoreTown Ballpark caught fire in the middle of the fireworks show, said BlueClaws spokesman Greg Giombarrese.
As is routine for all BlueClaws fireworks nights, the Lakewood Fire Department and Ocean County Fire Marshal were already at the ballpark as a precaution, and “they acted quickly and extinguished the fire in a safe manner,” Giombarrese said in a statement.
The fire broke out in a spot that is cleared by staff after the seventh inning of every game that features fireworks, so no fans were in the area of the blaze, he said.
Several attendees at the ball gameposted video of the blaze on social media.
The team thanked fire officials for “continuing to help make the BlueClaws experience a safe night out for friends and family.”
The BlueClaws are a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies. Before the fire interrupted the Fourth of July celebration, the BlueClaws lost to Hudson Valley 8-0.
