A four-year-old girl was killed in a fire at a three-family home on Bedford Street early Tuesday, reports The Courant.
She was one of three people on the first floor of the brick building at 62-64 Bedford Street when the fire broke out shortly after 5:30 a.m.
“It’s a tragic, tragic story,” said Fire Capt. James McLoughlin.
Firefighters arrived within minutes, but safety bars on the first-floor windows made it difficult to get into the building, he said. They had to rip out the bars on one of the windows to get inside.
They rescued a 43-year-old woman and a 7-year-old girl from the first floor, but a third person — apparently the girl’s little sister — died, he said.
Both survivors were transported to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, but the woman was later airlifted to Bridgeport Hospital’s burn unit to be treated for burns to her right arm, face and upper back, he said.
