Fire Forces 30 from Home in Fort Collins

A still-hot charcoal grill that was used hours prior is believed to have ignited a three-alarm apartment fire early Saturday that forced 30 people from their homes in Fort Collins, reports coloradoan.com.

Poudre Fire Authority crews were called about 3:05 a.m. Saturday to a unit of River Glenn Apartments in the 1100 block of Davidson Drive, on the southwest corner of Drake Road and Shields Street, agency spokesman Patrick Love said. Firefighters arrived and immediately faced heavy smoke and towering flames showing from the 16-unit apartment building.

A third alarm was requested to help quell the fire that tore through four units and began to spread into neighboring apartments. Part of the roof collapsed, and one person was treated and transported to Poudre Valley Hospital with non-life-threatening burns. A second person, it was later learned, was injured, Love said.

Two dogs and one cat were also rescued, and at least one of the dogs was taken to the Colorado State University Veterinary Hospital. The fire was brought under control at 4:35 a.m.
