EXTERIOR HOSE STRETCHES, PART 1: SINGLE HANDLINE OPERATION

You may have to stretch handlines up the exterior of a building for a number of reasons. Reasons include the need to stretch multiple handlines into one building, to avoid overcrowding the interior stairs, to operate in buildings without standpipes, and to operate in buildings that are vacant or in a state of disrepair with unsafe stairs.

Standpipe operations: follow-up

Just after my article "Standpipe System Operations: Engine Company Basics" (February 1996) went to press, the City of New York (NY) Fire Department experienced yet another tragedy. On January 5, 1996, Firefighter James Williams of Ladder Company 121 died as a result of burn injuries sustained while operating at a fire on the third floor of a standpipe-equipped multiple dwelling. Williams, part of Ladder 121`s forcible entry team, was overtaken by a fast-moving flamefront caused by a sudden chang

STANDPIPE SYSTEM OPERATIONS: ENGINE COMPANY BASICS

When fires occur in buildings equipped with standpipe systems, engine companies are responsible for completing three critical tasks:

Fighting fire with water

The "fighting fire with water" debate presents a complicated problem with no clear-cut solution. Having fought fires in the late `50s and through the `60s with smooth-bore and early "mystery" nozzles, I feel that the evolution to today`s combination nozzles has greatly enhanced firefighters` capabilities and versatility in getting their job done.
