The Bayonne Fire Department made history today by welcoming the first woman into its ranks in its 108 years of existence, reports nj.com.
Cailin Brodel, a lifelong Bayonne resident, understands the significance of becoming the first female to wear the uniform and knows she’ll be able to handle the challenge.
“There’s no reason why a woman can’t do this job just as well as a man,” she said after the ceremony.
The department also swore-in six new firefighters. The ceremony took place in City Hall’s main chamber, which is dedicated to the memory of Dorothy E. Harrington, Bayonne’s first woman Council Member.
Family, friends, and firefighters gathered and took pictures as Ryan Bomba, Vincent Oszmanski, Kenneth Sugrue, Louis Pacyna, Robert Baran, Vincent Bottino, and Brodel all took their oaths and received their assignments from Bayonne Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
Councilmembers and Mayor Jimmy Davis also congratulated the new firefighters, as well as Salvatore Gaetani, who was promoted to Captain.
“This is a great honor for me, this is a great honor for the city, and above all, it is a great honor for the firefighter and her family,” Davis said of Brodel.
Rogers was also very grateful for the determination and skill of the new recruits, including Brodel.
“You will serve as an inspiration for all females in the future,” he told the class during the ceremony.
